After a tense, breathless half hour, James finally managed to lift the last of the tiny creatures from the dark pit. Laid out on the ground, the five animals blinked up at them, their eyes a mix of confusion and curiosity.
The air hung heavy with tension as Tina and James considered their next move.
With renewed determination, they gently gathered the creatures into makeshift carriers. Nearby, the wolf pack watched closely, alert and poised.
Tenderly, Tina lifted the last fuzzy animal and carefully placed it into the waiting jaws of one of the wolves. The wolf’s bite was soft but secure, cradling the precious life with gentle strength.
Hurriedly, the unlikely group made their way out of the shadowed forest, each carrying a rescued creature as they moved swiftly toward the local veterinary clinic. Tina’s mind raced with questions—would the animals survive? What exactly were they? But she pushed her doubts aside, focusing on getting them the medical care they desperately needed.
Bursting into the clinic, Tina called out urgently for help. To her relief, Vincent, a seasoned veterinarian, appeared immediately, his sharp, experienced eyes taking in the situation.
With calm but firm directions, he guided Tina and James to place the creatures gently on the examination table. Just as Tina moved to follow him into the operating room, Vincent raised a hand to stop her.
“I know you want to stay with them, but I need space to work. Please wait outside—I promise I’ll update you as soon as I can.”
Tina opened her mouth to protest but stopped herself, realizing the vet knew best. With a reluctant nod, she stepped back to the waiting room, James close behind, both sharing the same anxious anticipation.
Time dragged on slowly as they sat hunched in the sterile waiting area, eyes fixed on the clock’s steady hands circling endlessly. Tina twisted her fingers nervously, her mind racing through worst-case scenarios—what if the creatures were too badly hurt? What if the vet couldn’t save them?
She had never felt so powerless.
All they could do now was wait—and hope.
